10 Moving Tips:

1. Make lists – Are you one of those people who rely on your memory and never write anything down? Forget this strategy when you’re moving because it is a very busy, and often stressful, time. There’s so much to do and to think of! What to pack, how to pack it, what to unpack first, what to throw out, who to call to set up utilities in your new place, etc. So – make lists for everything!! Create a record keeping system on your computer or in a notebook where you categorize the boxes and what is inside each one. Don’t forget to label your boxes! Then, make other necessary lists, such as who you need to call to set-up/ disconnect services, who you need to notify of your impending move, etc.

2. Have plenty of supplies – Make sure you have more boxes that you estimate you will need. On average, people always underestimate how much stuff they need. Chances are, you’ll need a few boxes just to pack up your bathroom! On top of that, you need tape, newspapers or other paper to wrap your breakable items and bubble wrap. Additionally, set aside a snack and some water in a central place so you have access to it in the chaos of your move.

3. Keep things together – Strategize to pack all the stuff that goes together – together. That means pack your lamps with the light bulbs and extension cords, pack all the things in your bookcase together, all the stuff in your drawers together, etc. The last thing you need when you are unpacking is finding lamp and then searching through all the other boxes to find a light bulb. In general, try to pack room by room and place as many objects that are kept in unison in one box.

4. Pack ahead – Don’t wait until the last minute to start or finish up packing. And as a rule, don’t ever leave anything to be packed the day of the move. If it’s winter, start packing your summer clothes a few weeks in advance. Start packing any unnecessary things, such as frames, art, vases, all the extra shampoos and soaps, etc. way in advance. That way, you can leave the week before the move to pack all the things you use on a regular basis.

5. Make a kit with cleaning supplies – Keep this kit next to you, you never know what might spill, break of get dirty during the move. This way you don’t have to unpack any boxes and quickly take care of the mess.

6. Utilize your luggage – Want a tip on free packing supplies? Use your luggage! Don’t waste space by transporting empty suitcases, stuff them with your clothes.

7. Safeguard valued items – Make sure to protect your valuable items. If possible, store them in a safe place, such as the safety box at the bank or at the home of a trusted family member of friend. If not possible, keep them with you during the move, or hide them in boxes with other stuff.

8. Keep important papers with you – Make sure to pack all your birth certificates, phone numbers, closing papers, etc. with you. Don’t pack anything that is related to your new move just in case you will need to look something up.

9. Utilize wardrobe boxes – Ask your mover if they bring wardrobe boxes with them during your move. You can stuff them with clothes, comforters, pillows, blankets, etc. These are usually provided for free by the moving company.

10. Plan furniture layout prior to the move – Don’t wait until the movers bring your furniture in to decide where it goes. This will prolong your time and cost you money. Come to your new location prior to the move and chart out the measurements of the room and the measurements of your furniture. Diagram where you want everything to go and make sure it will fit in the space.
